5 for 5
Congregations that give to the United Church of Christ's wider mission basic support and each of the four special mission offerings are "5 for 5 congregations." The four special offerings are: Our Church’s Wider Mission, Strengthen the Church, One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, and The Christmas Fund. First Congregational United Church of Christ in Salem, Oregon is a 5 for 5 congregation.

C.Ed. = short for our Christian Education Board. The Christian Education Committee provides lifelong learning opportunities and experiences to help form members’ identity as spiritual beings living in relationship to God and others; by fostering understanding of the sacredness of life, our connection to creation, and the commitment to learn and follow the values and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. C. Ed. Strategizes, envisions, and evaluates present and future educational programs. Engages in ongoing conversation and planning with the staff about educational programs. Selects and implements Christian education curricula supporting all age groups. Assists with recruitment and mentoring of teachers. Creates and implement all policies related to educational programs. Coordinates festivals and special events related to teaching and celebrating the Christian tradition. Works with other committees, members, teachers, and staff to accomplish an effective educational program for all ages.

CHP = Congregations Helping People. CHP is an expanding group of Salem churches that have come together to combine resources and work cooperatively to help people in need. People seeking help are often forced to go from church to church, obtaining piecemeal aid they need. Church staff, though eager to help, may not have the time, funds, or expertise to provide the best possible help and advice. CHP provides experienced, qualified social workers who are assisted by volunteers to link people with the right resources to address their immediate and long-term needs. When those resources do not exist, or the person does not qualify, CHP may be able to provide direct assistance. First Congregational United Church of Christ in Salemis a member church of CHP.

CPC = Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ
First Congregational United Church of Christ is a member church of the Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ. The CPC ministers to and provides ministry resources for: Local church lay and clergy leadership, Christian education programs and teachers, Local church program directors, Children, youth and families, and All people concerned about peace and justice in the

M & O = short for our Mission and Outreach Committee. The Mission and Outreach Committee is responsible for mission outreach in the local community, the conference, and beyond. It serves as an interface between the church and the community. It Proposes, plans, and enlists support for special community projects. M & O Designates the year’s special offerings.
Interprets and enlists support for special offerings, including those of the United Church of Christ. Lastly, M & O Designates recipients of the annual Mission and Outreach budget.

NiN = Neighbors in Need
This special mission offering supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States, including the Council of American Indian Ministries (CAIM), justice and advocacy, and direct service projects supported by Justice and Witness Ministries. It is received on the first Sunday of October.

OCWM = Our Church’s Wider Mission
This is the name the United Church of Christ gave to congregational gifts that support wider UCC ministry in Conference and national settings. OCWM grows the UCC’s future by funding the Stillspeaking Ministry, new and renewing churches, youth and young adult ministries, and lay and pastoral leadership formation—especially among women and people of color. These ministries are carried out by our church’s Conference (CPC), Local Church Ministries, and the Stillspeaking Ministry.

OGHS = One Great Hour of Sharing
This special mission offering channels resources for international programs in health, education, and agricultural development, emergency relief, refugee ministries, and both international and domestic disaster response, administered by Wider Church Ministries, Global Sharing of Resources. Typically, it is received on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

P & J = short for our Peace and Justice Committee. The Peace and Justice Committee engages in education, advocacy, and initiation of projects and hosting events that help our congregation live out its identity as both an Open and Affirming and a Just Peace Church. P & J Provides educational opportunities for the congregation related to peace, justice, and environmental sustainability. It Organizes ways for members of the congregation to advocate for peace, justice, environmental sustainability, and to engage in social action. It Initiates projects or host events that promote peace, justice, and environmental sustainability. It Participates with and supports other organizations promoting peace, justice, and environmental sustainability. Finally, P & J Makes educational and advocacy resources available to the congregation.

SIHN = Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network
Provides emergency housing and hospitality to homeless families and keeps them together in a time of crisis. SIHN assists families during temporary periods of homelessness, encourage them to create an achievable vision and develop a strong foundation for self-sufficiency.
 First Congregational United Church of Christ in Salem, Oregon hosts SIHN families on average 3 weeks a year.

STC = Strengthen the Church
Strengthen The Church is a special mission offering to reimagine and build the future of the UCC. Shared at the conference and national levels, STC largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. This offering is received on Pentecost Sunday.
